Mumbai, Oct 6: Ahead of the incoming winter flight timetable, Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is upgrading its ground transportation infrastructure. Passenger mobility offerings will grow to encompass 4,689 vehicles, covering categories such as taxis, buses, hire cars, and autorickshaws.
Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) is rolling out this expansion to ensure travelers enjoy more seamless links to and from the facility as flight activity ramps up during the winter season, scheduled between October 25, 2026, and March 27, 2027.
The enlarged network comprises 3,787 ride-hailing taxis, 547 buses, 184 rental cars, and 171 autorickshaws. Additionally, the terminal will feature enhanced mobility signage, wayfinding tools, and on-site assistance to streamline passenger flow.
Specific zones have been designated for buses, shuttles, arrival and departure lanes, as well as private vehicles, aiding in traffic flow management and minimizing congestion during busy times.
Broader Bus Access
Public transit is also seeing growth. Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) currently runs seven exclusive airport lines linking Terminal 1 to areas like Kharkopar, Targhar, Belapur, Nerul, Panvel, Khandeshwar, and the Airport Project Office.
During rush hour, shuttle frequency between Belapur and Nerul increases to roughly every 15 to 20 minutes, offering another viable choice for airport travelers.
Private carrier Chalo Bus provides 21 services each day tying NMIA to key hubs such as Marol in Andheri East, Bandra, Dadar, and the World Trade Centre in Colaba.
Starting October 7, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) plans to deploy e-Shivai electric bus services departing from the airport, linking NMIA to significant destinations including Pune, Borivali, and Dadar East.
Enhanced Passenger Choices
Cab services offered by Bharat Taxi, Uber Go, and Uber Premier will function via specific airport pickup points.
Travelers will also benefit from a free hourly shuttle run by Cityflo, Aarya, and Chalo, shuttling between Navi Mumbai International Airport and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
Rail access remains a key component of the broader transport strategy. Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 is already active locally, with Mumbai Metro Line 8 proposed to bridge NMIA and CSMIA.
Backdrop for Airport Growth
NMIA’s launch phase is built to accommodate approximately 20 million passengers per year, alongside a cargo capacity of 0.5 million tonnes.
As flight schedules grow, enhancing road, bus, taxi, and rail links seeks to build a cohesive transport ecosystem surrounding the airport.
This enlarged ground mobility framework is projected to boost passenger accessibility while reinforcing NMIA’s position as a vital aviation and logistics center for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
As NMIA transitions into the winter flight schedule, its emphasis on multimodal connectivity is set to simplify travel and tighten connections between the airport and major residential, commercial, and transport hubs throughout Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
