Renewable Energy Sector Achieves New Milestone

Agartala, Jan 24: Tripura has reached a landmark achievement in renewable energy, generating over 7 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity through the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), government officials announced on Saturday.

Bipul Bhowmik, spokesperson for the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), described this milestone as a pivotal moment in the state’s progress toward energy independence and ecological sustainability.

The electricity produced by rooftop solar systems now exceeds 7 MW, demonstrating heightened public engagement in renewable energy projects. This achievement underscores Tripura’s shift toward clean energy and reduced reliance on traditional power sources.

Under the PMSGMBY scheme, households gain financial benefits by installing rooftop solar panels. Participants can eliminate electricity costs and generate extra income by feeding surplus power into the government grid.

Initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the program encourages homes to become small-scale power producers. Its dual goals focus on lowering household expenses and advancing environmental sustainability through renewable energy.

Tripura has seen strong public interest, with 17,601 consumers registering under the scheme. Installations have been completed in 2,061 households, while subsidies have been disbursed to 1,746 beneficiaries. Eligible participants can receive up to ₹85,800 in government support, enhancing accessibility for middle- and lower-income families.

Energy experts confirm that even a 1 kW solar system can produce roughly 100 units of electricity monthly—enough to power an average home. Excess energy exported to the grid offers long-term savings and supplemental income.

TSECL provides technical assistance, public awareness campaigns, and streamlined installation processes to facilitate adoption. The corporation aims to increase Tripura’s solar capacity to 50 MW within a year—a target that could revolutionize the state’s energy landscape.

Power officials emphasize rooftop solar as a financially viable solution amid rising electricity costs. TSECL encourages consumers to register through official channels or visit local offices to join the initiative.

Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that widespread adoption could transform the state’s energy independence. If 500,000 households install 2 kW solar panels, the state could generate nearly 1,000 MW daily. Additionally, solar installations on 2,000 government buildings are underway, projected to produce 80 MW upon completion next year.
