Startup Ecosystem: A Decade of Growth in India

New Delhi, January 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the nation’s thriving startup landscape on Friday, noting how it fosters creator empowerment within an inclusive framework while envisioning vast opportunities for a developed India.

Replying to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s social media post on X, the Prime Minister remarked: “Modern India champions ambition and innovation—our people now build what they once aspired to find.”

This exchange referenced the minister’s analysis of India’s startup evolution, published as the government’s Startup India program marks a decade since its inception.

In his National Startup Day article, Goyal highlighted India’s emergence as home to one of the planet’s largest startup networks. The Startup India effort has matured into a nationwide innovation hub that channels young entrepreneurial vigor toward employment generation and economic acceleration.

The minister cited data showing over 200,000 government-recognized startups have collectively produced more than 2.1 million jobs. A record-breaking 49,000 startups received recognition in 2025 alone—the highest annual tally since the initiative began.

“India claims the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, propelled by ₹15 lakh crore in industry investments,” he stated.

Goyal spotlighted inclusivity as fundamental to this expansion, revealing that women lead or co-lead over 45% of recognized startups. Nearly 50% of these enterprises originate beyond major metropolitan areas, signaling Tier 2 and 3 cities’ rising influence as innovation centers.

A pivotal transformation over the past ten years involves heightened focus on cutting-edge technologies. India’s leap from 81st to 38th position in the Global Innovation Index since 2015 reflects this shift, with upcoming government backing for deep tech ventures poised to further strengthen this trajectory.
