The Spring Startup Surge: March overtakes January as Britain’s Most Popular Month to Start a Business, New Data Reveals
3 min read

June 18: A recent analysis of more than 29,000 virtual office and registered address subscriptions shows that the UK experiences an annual spring startup surge. March has now surpassed January as the most popular month to launch a business. The study was conducted by Hoxton Mix, a London‑based provider of virtual office and registered address services.
March recorded 2,908 sign‑ups, making it the busiest month of the year, while December was the quietest with only 1,879 sign‑ups. This represents a 55 % increase over the lowest‑performing month. The data suggests that entrepreneurs are moving away from the “New Year, New Me” impulse and instead spend the first few months refining and testing their ideas before officially launching in spring.
After March (2,908 sign‑ups), May follows with 2,738 subscriptions and April comes in third with 2,678. Launching during spring allows founders to align with the new tax year that begins in April, offering a natural checkpoint for those who have focused on financial planning and efficiency. Moreover, March through May often bring stronger market conditions, driven by rising consumer activity and improved trading environments ahead of the summer peak.

Chris Sees, CEO of Hoxton Mix, commented:
“Many assume January leads the pack because of New Year’s resolutions and a fresh start mindset. However, Hoxton Mix’s virtual office and registered address data tells a different story. Entrepreneurs typically use the opening months of the year to plan and prepare, then convert those plans into action by March, creating a clear spring‑time startup surge across the UK. The strong showing of March, April and May indicates founders feel more confident launching once the new year is underway, at the start of the fresh tax year, and as market conditions begin to improve.”
Knowledge‑driven sectors dominate demand for virtual offices and registered addresses, with Information and Communication plus Professional Services together accounting for 17,180 sign‑ups — nearly 60 % of the total. Specifically, Information and Communication leads with 8,965 sign‑ups, which is roughly 9 % higher than the Professional, Scientific & Technical segment at 8,215.
While March emerged as the UK’s top month overall for business formation, the data reveals sector‑specific patterns. Information, communication and professional services firms tend to launch in early spring (March), whereas construction and administrative businesses peak later in May, and real estate companies show a preference for August.
There is no single “perfect” moment to start a venture, but Hoxton Mix’s insights highlight clear trends in how modern entrepreneurs use virtual offices and registered addresses, reflecting broader patterns in company formation. Britain’s entrepreneurial spirit remains robust, and spring has become the season when many founders turn their plans into reality.
