This Independence Day, India’s Shift Towards Higher Life Insurance Coverage Signals Greater Financial Preparedness

Mumbai, Aug 14: An analysis of life‑insurance business data for FY2021‑FY2025 compiled by the Insurance Information Bureau of India shows an encouraging shift in India’s protection landscape.

The figures reveal that current policyholders are steadily boosting their financial safety nets by choosing higher coverage amounts. As life stages change and responsibilities grow, more consumers are raising their sum assured. This pattern reflects increasing trust in life insurance as a long‑term safeguard and underscores the advantage of starting protection early.

The IIB study highlights a clear move toward larger life‑insurance sums across every segment over the past five years. Between FY2021 and FY2025, the ₹2 lakh‑₹5 lakh band rose by 5.6 percentage points, while the ₹10 lakh‑₹25 lakh segment gained 2 points. At the top end, policies with a sum assured above ₹50 lakh jumped 68 %—from 4.4 million in FY2021 to 7.4 million in FY2025—generating an annual premium of roughly ₹975 billion.

Meanwhile, in FY2021 about two‑thirds of all active life‑insurance policies had a sum assured of ₹2 lakh or less. By FY2025 that share had fallen to 53.6 %, and every higher‑sum‑assured bracket showed steady growth throughout the period.

The data also indicate that policyholders are committing more money to their protection. While the total number of in‑force life‑insurance policies stayed roughly stable at around 343 million over the five‑year span, the average yearly premium per policy climbed 42.6 %, from ₹15,567 in FY2021 to ₹22,195 in FY2025. Together, these trends suggest that holders are deepening their cover over time rather than treating life insurance as a one‑off or tax‑saving product.

Mr. Kamlesh Rao, Chairperson, Insurance Awareness Committee (IAC)‑Life, said:

The IIB data make it clear that Indians who remain invested in life insurance increasingly recognise its worth and strengthen their cover as their lives and responsibilities evolve. It is heartening to see policyholders consistently moving toward higher levels of insurance protection, signalling a growing commitment to financial security for themselves and their families. For those who have not yet begun their life‑insurance journey, the message is simple: the earlier you start, the more time you have to build comprehensive protection that can grow alongside your aspirations and duties.”

Several factors are pushing the shift toward higher coverage and larger premium outlays. Greater awareness of life‑insurance importance, rising incomes, inflation, and changing life stages and responsibilities all fuel demand for more comprehensive protection. The COVID‑19 pandemic and its aftermath exposed protection gaps, prompting many to reassess their financial resilience. At the same time, insurers have rolled out more tailored solutions that meet diverse customer needs, making life insurance more relevant and accessible. Importantly, customers have grasped the unique value proposition of life insurance. As a long‑term protection and financial‑security tool, it complements other investment avenues—while most traditional savings or wealth‑building products help create assets, life insurance shields against risk and volatility while doing the same.

The Insurance Awareness Committee – Life notes that these trends reinforce the idea of viewing life insurance as a lifelong financial companion rather than a one‑time purchase. Starting early lets individuals lock in protection at a younger age, enjoy lower premiums, and gradually raise coverage as income, responsibilities, and long‑term financial goals expand.

IAC‑Life will continue to draw on the IIB study’s insights to design focused awareness campaigns that encourage more Indians to embark on their life‑insurance journey early and build lasting financial resilience through adequate, evolving protection.
