Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted expanding cooperation opportunities with India across aviation, space exploration, high technology, artificial intelligence, and defense sectors during bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. The leaders emphasized leveraging advancing economies to enhance strategic partnerships.
“Our nations’ progress unlocks new collaborative prospects. We’re advancing cooperation in cutting-edge fields including aerospace, artificial intelligence, and defense technologies,” Putin stated at the summit in New Delhi.
Putin emphasized the historical depth of bilateral relations, noting their resilience and mutual trust. Trade imbalances emerged as a focal point, with FY25 figures showing India’s $59 billion deficit due to $63.8 billion in Russian imports—primarily energy—versus $4.9 billion in exports.
A senior Russian official confirmed the visiting delegation’s goal to boost imports of Indian automobiles, textiles, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, and engineering goods. Both nations aim for $100 billion bilateral trade by 2030, with India stressing reciprocal benefits.
The leaders reviewed multiple pre-negotiated agreements, with Putin acknowledging bilateral teams’ preparatory efforts. Prime Minister Modi characterized the partnership as a model for international relations: “Our objective is to elevate economic ties to unprecedented levels, guided by shared interests.”
The Ukraine conflict featured in discussions, with Modi acknowledging Russia’s regular updates and reiterating India’s peace advocacy. “Given recent developments, I’m confident global peace efforts will advance,” Modi stated. Putin expressed gratitude for India’s diplomatic engagement with the issue.
