Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran stated on Wednesday that the government remains unworried about the rupee’s depreciation beyond 90 against the US dollar.

Speaking during a discussion at a CII event, he noted that the currency’s decline has not significantly influenced inflation levels or export performance, though he anticipates possible stabilization in the coming year.

The rupee has weakened approximately 5% versus the dollar throughout 2025.

Earlier in the day, the currency plunged to a historic low of 90.30 against the dollar during intraday trading, depreciating by 34 paise from the previous session’s closing rate. Analysts attributed this volatility to foreign institutional outflows and aggressive dollar acquisitions by domestic banks.

Additional pressure stemmed from bearish domestic equity trends and uncertainty surrounding a prospective India-US trade agreement, currency traders observed.
