Accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) have now accumulated balances exceeding ₹2.75 lakh crore.

Banks’ targeted initiatives have successfully revived numerous previously inactive accounts in recent months.

According to recent government reports, PMJDY accounts held ₹2,75,057 crore as of October 22, 2025, with 56.85 crore enrolled beneficiaries. Public sector banks dominate these deposits with ₹2.15 lakh crore, while Regional Rural Banks hold ₹51,489 crore and private banks account for ₹8,149 crore.

Alongside deposit growth, the nationwide Saturation Campaign is driving KYC updates and financial inclusion efforts, bringing dormant accounts back into active use,” noted a senior State Bank of India official.

Earlier data revealed approximately 13 crore inactive accounts among the total 56 crore PMJDY beneficiaries as of August 2025. To address this, the Department of Financial Services conducted a three-month Financial Inclusion Saturation Programme between July and September 2025. This campaign aimed to expand enrollment in PMJDY, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY).

Reactivation efforts

Preliminary assessments suggest roughly 5% of inactive PMJDY accounts completed KYC re-verification by September’s conclusion,” the SBI executive added.

Economist Yerram Raju emphasized that financial inclusion goals remain unmet while significant numbers of accounts lie inactive. “While the Saturation Programme marks progress, sustained efforts are needed to activate more accounts,” he stated.

Prasanna Tantri, Executive Director at ISB’s Centre for Analytical Finance, commented: “Account activation is commendable, but the government should now leverage this network to enhance credit accessibility. PMJDY has remarkably achieved savings account penetration, with nearly 90% of Indian households now banked.”
