The service conditions of IDBI Bank employees will remain unchanged following the sale of a 60% stake to Canada’s Fairfax Financial Holdings, a senior government official said on Friday.

Arunish Chawla, Secretary of DIPAM, said that both existing staff and pensioners have no cause for fear regarding the Rs 52,878 crore sale of more than 60% of IDBI Bank’s equity.

DIPAM Secretary Statement on Share Purchase Agreement

“Under the share purchase agreement, the existing employees’ service conditions cannot be altered to their disadvantage by the strategic buyer,” Chawla told PTI.

These remarks were made amid employee protests over the government’s sale decision; staff have announced a nationwide strike in early November, and the United Forum of Bank Unions has pledged support.

To reassure pensioners, Chawla confirmed a dedicated pension fund has been set aside and that all commitments will be honoured.

Chawla stated that IDBI Bank is not a nationalised bank and that employee service conditions are decided by the board in consultation with employees, not by the government.

Chawla said IDBI Bank is being restructured as a going concern and will remain a board‑managed entity, continuing to operate under existing company and labour law.
