Financiers Are Also Beginning To Explore Assured FutureValue Financing To Reduce Resale Uncertainty

Financiers are starting to test future‑value guarantees to lessen worries about resale.

Mandeep Kaur, a 28‑year‑old entrepreneur from Gurugram, went to Autobest Emperio’s high‑end used‑car outlet in West Delhi seeking a classic luxury SUV like an Audi Q5 or a Range Rover Velar. Electric cars were not on his radar. After a brief test drive in a pre‑owned Mercedes‑Benz EQE, he came back the next day and purchased the electric luxury sedan.

Industry leaders note that such encounters are rising as buyers grow confident in EV performance, reliability and long‑term value. Financiers are likewise looking at future‑value guarantees to ease resale doubts. India’s used‑EV market is projected to expand 20‑25 % in the coming year, climbing from an estimated 2,000‑3,000 deals in FY25 to roughly 8,000‑12,000 transactions in FY26, per market sources. This uptick follows the initial batch of electric passenger cars sold in FY22‑FY23 reaching their replacement stage, swelling the inventory available for the secondary market.

Financing breakthroughs poised to fuel the next growth stage

Industry observers think financing innovation may serve as a major driver for the sector’s next expansion wave. Multiple lenders are reviewing future‑value guarantee products for the used‑vehicle segment to cut down residual‑value and depreciation uncertainty. Bajaj Finance is one of the lenders assessing such a solution for the pre‑owned car market, indicating that organized financiers now regard used EVs as a rising asset class.

Speaking with businessline, Avneet Singh Kohli, founder of Delhi‑based luxury used‑car dealer Autobest Emperio, noted that increasing financier interest mirrors growing confidence in the segment. “Buyers of their first premium vehicle want to know today what it will be worth in three years. Financing tools that give clearer future‑value insight can boost buyer confidence and ease depreciation worries,” Kohli added.

Data and diagnostics strengthen lender confidence in used EVs

Until recently, banks and non‑banking financial companies (NBFCs) concentrated mainly on financing new EVs, staying wary of used EVs because of scarce resale history, worries about battery wear, and doubts over residual values.

That view is shifting. Certified battery‑health checks, OEM‑supported refurbishment programs, and digital service logs are delivering greater transparency on vehicle condition and ownership background. Industry experts say these advances are turning used EVs into a more financeable asset class and pulling in more lender interest.

Benchmark pricing and transparency point to market maturity

The rise of benchmark pricing shows the used‑EV market is maturing. A two‑year‑old Tata Nexon EV usually fetches ₹5.7‑9 lakh, while a Tata Tiago EV goes for ₹5‑7.5 lakh. In the mid‑premium tier, MG ZS EVs start near ₹9.8 lakh and Mahindra XUV400 models range from ₹9.5‑13 lakh.

Luxury EVs are also gaining traction. BMW iX units are listed at ₹48‑68 lakh, Audi e‑tron and Q8 e‑tron SUVs at ₹48‑72 lakh, and Kia EV6 models at ₹30‑40 lakh. Dealers note that cars accompanied by certified battery‑health reports and clear service records can command a premium of ₹40,000‑70,000 over comparable vehicles lacking such paperwork.

Automakers and retailers boost the pre‑owned EV ecosystem

Automakers and organized retailers are together investing in the ecosystem needed for sustained growth. Recently, JSW MG Motor India teamed up with used‑car platform Spinny to bolster India’s pre‑owned EV market via battery‑health certification, warranty continuity, clear pricing, and certified refurbishment standards.

Vinay Raina, Chief Commercial Officer at JSW MG Motor India, said a reliable pre‑owned ecosystem is essential for speeding up EV uptake nationwide.

Spinny founder and CEO Niraj Singh agreed, pointing out that the next EV adoption phase will hinge on customer trust as much as on tech advances. As more electric vehicles finish their first ownership round, industry experts believe that greater vehicle supply, dependable battery‑health checks, organized retail platforms, and inventive financing options will dictate how fast India’s used‑EV market expands over the coming years. For financiers, the segment is shifting from a niche to a viable, expanding asset class within the wider automotive sector.
