UPI transactions hit record high of ₹28.33 lakh crore in January

Transactions via the widely-used Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reached unprecedented levels in January, with values hitting ₹28.33 lakh crore and volumes surging to 21.70 billion, as reported by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
This marks an increase from the ₹27.97 lakh crore transaction value recorded in December.
Month-over-month growth stood at 21% in value terms, with daily averages for January reaching 700 million transactions valued at ₹91,403 crore.
Ramesh Narasimhan, CEO of Worldline, commented: “UPI continues its robust expansion trajectory. January 2026 alone witnessed 21.7 billion UPI transactions totaling ₹28.33 lakh crore – reflecting growth over December figures and a notable 28% year-on-year increase.”
