Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre Elevates India’s Biotech Innovation Globally
The Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC), a pioneering biotech hub in India’s “Silicon Valley,” was jointly founded by the Karnataka government’s Department of IT, BT and S&T and the Government of India’s Department of Biotechnology. Designed to foster revolutionary advancements in healthcare, agriculture, climate tech, and the blue economy, BBC serves as a launchpad for India’s ambitions to lead global biotech entrepreneurship.
Combining cutting-edge laboratories, expert mentorship, funding access, and structured incubation programs, BBC empowers startups to evolve from ideation to commercialization. Its holistic ecosystem equips entrepreneurs with technical, regulatory, and business expertise while forging international alliances to integrate Indian innovation into global markets.
A flagship initiative, the BBC–La Trobe IGNITE Lab, exemplifies this global vision. Launched in 2024 as part of the Bangalore-Melbourne Bioinnovation Exchange Corridor, this virtual residency connects Indian and Australian innovators to co-develop technologies in healthcare, agri-biotech, and clean energy. Australian startups gain access to India’s vast markets and BBC’s infrastructure, while Indian ventures leverage La Trobe University’s research facilities, investor networks, and mentorship.
Dr. Mohamed Adil AA, BBC’s Managing Director, describes the IGNITE Lab as “a bridge uniting India’s entrepreneurial drive with Australia’s research excellence,” enabling startups to scale globally. Under his leadership, BBC prioritizes scientific entrepreneurship, nurturing solutions for worldwide challenges.
BBC amplifies India’s biotech presence through international trade missions, summits like MEDICA Fair, and pitch events such as the 2025 India-Australia LaunchPad PitchFest. Winning startups—including Microbeworks Scientific (microbial dyes), Hornet Biologicals (genetic livestock screening), and IMRobonix (surgical robotics)—highlight India’s innovation prowess.
Domestically, BBC anchors Karnataka’s biotech ecosystem through initiatives like the Elevate 100 Program, which funds and mentors high-potential startups. Over 100 ventures have transformed ideas into market-ready products with BBC’s prototyping and commercialization support.
