SmartHR, Japan’s top cloud-based human resources management platform, has secured a strategic minority investment totaling $96 million (roughly ¥14.6 billion) from global growth equity firm General Atlantic. This deal represents General Atlantic’s inaugural growth equity investment in Japan and is poised to fuel SmartHR’s ongoing innovation and expansion in the HR technology space.

The investment was acquired by General Atlantic from Coral Capital, an early backer of SmartHR. Coral Capital will retain a minority stake while collaborating to drive SmartHR’s future growth through product enhancements, strategic alliances, customer-focused initiatives, targeted acquisitions, and refined market strategies.

Since its founding in 2013, SmartHR has become Japan’s dominant HR software provider, delivering a comprehensive cloud solution that digitizes critical HR functions. These include employee records management, talent and labor processes, time tracking, payroll, and compliance reporting—boosting workplace efficiency, productivity, and regulatory adherence.

Additionally, SmartHR’s app-store ecosystem, SmartHR Plus, enables seamless integrations with third-party applications, allowing businesses to customize secure data-sharing workflows.

Masato Serizawa, CEO of SmartHR, welcomed General Atlantic as a strategic ally, emphasizing the firm’s track record in scaling HR software companies as a catalyst for SmartHR’s next growth stage—focused on enhancing productivity and inclusivity in workplaces.

Martín Escobari, Co-President of General Atlantic, highlighted Japan’s growing entrepreneurial landscape and the rising demand for cloud-based solutions. He cited SmartHR’s scalable platform as uniquely positioned to capitalize on enterprise digitization trends.

SmartHR’s previous funding milestones include a $140 million Series E round led by KKR and a $143 million Series D round backed by Light Street Capital and Sequoia Heritage, among others.

The latest investment underscores deepening confidence in Japan’s evolving HR tech sector and signals heightened global interest in the country’s software innovators.
