Indonesia Advances AI-Driven Weather Prediction System
Jakarta, January 20, 2026 – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has finalized research on an artificial intelligence-based rainfall nowcasting platform, designed to generate hyperlocal weather predictions up to three hours in advance. The system achieves a resolution of 500 meters, enabling finer monitoring of imminent weather events.
Integrated Technology Enhances Precision
By merging BMKG’s radar networks with global satellite data through AI algorithms, the platform demonstrated superior accuracy compared to conventional forecasting models during trials in Jakarta and West Java. The solution supports critical sectors—including emergency response, agriculture, transportation, and energy—with rapid updates vital for urban flood mitigation and crop management.
Public Deployment Prioritizes High-Risk Areas
Developed through a non-commercial partnership with PT Environmental Intelligence Indonesia, the system will expand to Sumatra and Sulawesi while remaining under BMKG’s operational control. The technology aims to strengthen disaster preparedness against intensifying weather extremes, enabling faster evacuation protocols and resource optimization to reduce economic losses.
