Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has finalized agreements to purchase a 51% stake in Brij Hospitality, the entity behind the boutique experiential leisure brand Brij. This strategic move grants IHCL ownership of the Brij brand and aligns with its plans to expand the boutique leisure segment nationwide in partnership with the original promoters.
Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of IHCL, commented, “India’s hospitality landscape is experiencing steady growth fueled by higher disposable incomes and a shift toward experiential leisure offerings. We’re excited to strengthen our collaboration with the Clarks Group by transitioning from a marketing alliance to a majority stake in Brij Hotels—a pioneer in India’s boutique leisure space.”
He continued, “This acquisition solidifies IHCL’s leadership in India’s leisure tourism market, particularly in cultural, spiritual, and wildlife destinations. Brij’s presence in unconventional locations like Jaipur, Varanasi, Ranthambore, Goa, and the northeastern regions diversifies IHCL’s portfolio. Our total portfolio now stands at 610 hotels, with 253 in development—keeping us firmly on track to achieve our goal of 700 hotels under the Accelerate 2030 strategy.”
Brij Hotels specializes in intimate luxury properties, offering authentic, immersive stays across India. Notable locations include the heritage BrijRama Palace in Varanasi—an architectural gem celebrating the city’s cultural legacy.
Udit Kumar and Anant Apurv Kumar, Co-Founders of Brij Hospitality, stated, “Partnering with IHCL marks a transformative step for boutique hospitality. Brij Hotels’ commitment to culturally rich, design-led experiences resonates with IHCL’s legacy of showcasing Indian hospitality globally. Together, we aim to create meaningful journeys and establish India’s first globally recognized boutique hospitality brand.”
Currently, Brij Hotels operates 22 properties, with an additional 11 in development, emphasizing personalized service and unique settings.
