Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran stated India’s economy is poised to surpass the $4 trillion milestone during the current financial year.
Addressing the IVCA Green Returns Summit 2025, he highlighted India’s position as the world’s fifth-largest economy with a GDP nearing $3.9 trillion, noting that continued growth will propel it beyond the $4 trillion threshold.
Nageswaran emphasized the critical role of robust economic expansion amid shifting global geopolitics, asserting that rapid growth strengthens India’s global influence.
He also underscored the need to balance economic progress with environmental sustainability, stressing that climate action and green initiatives must align with national priorities.
Nageswaran pointed to India’s acute awareness of climate risks—such as impacts on agriculture, ecosystems, and coastal regions—and reiterated the nation’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
He clarified that progress toward climate goals must prioritize affordable energy access and reduced energy intensity, with innovation and startups playing key roles in accelerating solutions.
Earlier in May, Nageswaran highlighted India’s urgent need to generate approximately 8 million jobs annually over the next decade to maximize its fleeting demographic dividend. Speaking at an ICRIER-Prosus webinar, he advocated for AI to augment human labor, particularly in healthcare and education, rather than replace it.
