The Reserve Bank– Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS), 2026, eliminates monetary ceilings for disputes brought before an RBI Ombudsman against regulated entities. These officials may facilitate settlements or issue binding awards regardless of the disputed amount.
For verified instances of consequential financial damage, ombudsmen now hold authority to award compensation reaching ₹30 lakh. Separately, claimants may receive up to ₹3 lakh as restitution for time expenditures, documentation costs, mental distress, or harassment endured during grievance resolution processes.
Revised Regulatory Framework
Effective July 1, 2026, the updated RB-IOS framework will govern banks, non-banking financial institutions, prepaid payment issuers, and credit bureaus. The Reserve Bank stated this modernization intends to enhance complaint resolution efficiency while strengthening consumer protection mechanisms.
The redesigned system emphasizes accessible, timely, and impartial dispute resolution without requiring formal legal proceedings. RBI officials designated as ombudsmen or deputies will typically serve three-year terms to ensure institutional continuity.
The central bank will establish specialized Centralised Receipt and Processing Centers to handle complaint intake and initial processing. Digital submissions via the portal remain encouraged, though physical and emailed complaints will also route through these centralized hubs.
