NEW DELHI: The number of teachers in Indian schools has surpassed the one-crore milestone, as reported in the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) 2024-25 findings released by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

“The rise in teacher strength is a crucial development toward enhancing student-teacher ratios, elevating education quality, and bridging regional gaps in teacher distribution,” the report stated.

Teacher numbers have shown consistent growth since 2022-23, witnessing a 6.7% surge in the 2024-25 academic year compared to the previous period.

The latest data also highlights an increase in female teacher representation, with women now accounting for 54.2% of the total workforce. “Girls’ enrollment has risen to 48.3% in 2024-25 from 48.1% the previous year, reflecting gradual progress in gender equity initiatives within the education sector,” the report added.

The current Pupil-Teacher Ratio (PTR) stands at 10 (Foundational), 13 (Preparatory), 17 (Middle), and 21 (Secondary), showing notable improvement and alignment with the National Education Policy’s (NEP) recommended 1:30 standard.
