Taj Hotels Enters Egypt With Management Deal For Cairo’s Iconic Continental Hotel

Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has finalized an agreement to manage a Taj-branded property in Cairo, marking the hospitality group’s first foray into Egypt and advancing its global growth initiatives.

“Cairo’s deep cultural legacy and geographically pivotal position bridging Africa, the Middle East, and Europe make it a vital center for international tourism and commerce,” stated Puneet Chhatwal, IHCL’s Managing Director and CEO. “Introducing the Taj brand here supports our strategy to establish presences in major global gateway cities. We express gratitude to Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly for facilitating this opportunity.”

Hisham El Demery of E.G.O.T.H commented, “The reimagining of the Grand Continental Hotel as Taj Cairo represents our dedication to preserving Egypt’s architectural legacy. Partnering with IHCL allows us to combine historical restoration with internationally recognized hospitality standards, creating a landmark that will enhance Cairo’s tourism sector.”

The historic property, dating to 1870, stands adjacent to Azbakeya Garden and Opera Square—key historic sites in Egypt’s capital. Renovation work began earlier this year, focusing on preserving original architectural elements while modernizing facilities.

Upon completion, the 300-room Taj Cairo will occupy Opera Square’s heritage district, offering views of Azbakeya Garden while positioned minutes from the Nile. The restoration will balance preservation of significant architectural features with contemporary design innovations. Plans include multiple dining venues, wellness facilities, and versatile event spaces for professional and social functions.

Egypt’s capital attracts visitors with globally recognized sites including the Giza Pyramids, Sphinx, and Egyptian Museum, alongside historic mosques and lively marketplaces, cementing its status as a premier travel destination.
