IHCL expands presence in Sri Lanka, signs a Taj hotel in Weligama

India’s leading hospitality group, The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), has signed an agreement for a new Taj property in Weligama, marking another step in its Sri Lanka expansion. The upcoming greenfield project will include 220 rooms, 80 of which will be luxury residences.

Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and CEO of IHCL, stated, “Weligama is emerging as a key coastal destination in Sri Lanka, driven by growing interest in surfing, wellness, and nature-based tourism. As the country’s tourism sector continues to recover, this project reinforces Taj’s commitment to the region. We look forward to working with Beryll Group on this initiative.”

Situated along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, the beachfront Taj Weligama will showcase panoramic Indian Ocean vistas. Amenities will include diverse dining venues—an all-day restaurant, two specialty restaurants, a beach bar, lounge, and deli—along with Taj’s J Wellness Circle spa. Leisure facilities encompass a children’s play area, entertainment zone, fitness center, and swimming pool. Event spaces will include a 9,000 sq. ft. convention hall, meeting rooms, and landscaped lawns.
